Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia is seeking a US patent for haptic tattoos that would vibrate to alert you of incoming calls on your mobile phone in the very near future.
The technology would enable tattoos to receive magnetic waves emitted by mobile phones, and the waves would trigger tattoos to generate "perceivable stimulus" to alert you to calls, messages, or even batteries running low.
Haptic tattoos are made of ferromagnetic (containing metal particles) ink. Sensations caused by the tattoos, permanent or temporary, could be customized depending on the content, suggesting vibrations could vary in intensity and timing depending on who was calling or whether it was a text message. You could then set up the type of vibrations you want to use as signals for incoming phone calls, mails, or even alarms. It could be one short pulse, multiple short pulses, few long pulses, mixture of short and long pulses, strong pulses or weak pulses.
When the stimulus becomes weak, you would be able to recharge the tattoo using strong magnets. While tattoos are a lasting decoration on your skin, the concept would also work with removable stickers treated with the same ferromagnetic ink. This is a more appealing option for the weak-hearted ones who could not live with the constant fear of being jolted out of bed by a preset alarm!
