Elizabeth Banks admits she "totally cried" while she was shooting The Hunger Games. The actress plays Effie Trinket in the film adaptation of the popular books by Suzanne Collins.
Elizabeth is a huge fan of the novels and became hugely emotional during one pivotal scene. "When watching it, I totally cried. I cried making the movie, seriously," Elizabeth told MTV News. "When we were shooting the Reaping, and the very first time Jennifer [Lawrence] came out and said, 'I volunteer. I volunteer.' I think it was rehearsal; we weren't even shooting yet. I was like, 'That's the most amazing thing.'"
Elizabeth is thrilled with how the movie turned out. She believes the finished result remains faithful to the book and should be well-received by critics and cinemagoers. "Totally unbiased, as if I was just off the street: it's the greatest movie of all time," she smiled. "It's really good." In the movie, Elizabeth wears a series of colourful and outlandish costumes – as well as an array of wigs.
The 38-year-old star says her portrayal of Effie was inspired by one particular screen icon. "[The voice] was very much inspired by Rosalind Russell's 'Auntie Mame'. I really felt like Effie is everyone's 'Auntie Mame', just an outrageous person who says all of the wrong things and has all these crazy friends and lives a very extravagant lifestyle that's beyond her," she explained. "She's one of my favourite performers, and it's one of my favourite performances. She just has that great New York Broadway accent in the film, so that was my jumping-off point for Effie."
